Why concrete needs protection against moisture and acids

Concrete is strong and durable, but it is not invulnerable. Especially in stables, agricultural facilities, and other intensively used environments, concrete is put under a lot of stress. Moisture, acids from animal feed, saliva, milk, manure, and chemicals can corrode the concrete surface.

Acids attack the cement structure

Concrete has a porous structure. Liquids can penetrate the surface through these pores. Acids can then react with the components of the cement, causing the concrete structure to slowly break down.

This can become visible as a rough, dusty, or crumbling surface. Furthermore, damage, brittle spots, and cracks make it even easier for moisture and aggressive substances to penetrate deeper into the concrete.

Milk, saliva, and feed residues can also play a role

In an agricultural environment, it is not just strong acid that poses a risk. Milk, saliva, and feed residues can accumulate on the concrete and, in combination with moisture and organic acids, cause additional stress. Cleaning agents and disinfectants can further increase this stress.

The longer liquids remain on the concrete, the greater the chance of corrosion.

Power troweling concrete is a temporary solution

Power-troweled concrete is less porous and has a dense structure. Juices and liquids will not penetrate as quickly. However, depending on the conditions, this surface treatment will also quickly wear away, leaving the pores of the concrete open once again for further liquid penetration.

Protect concrete with a suitable coating

A good concrete coating forms a protective, sealed layer between the concrete and the aggressive environment. This makes the surface less porous and gives moisture, acids, and chemicals much less chance to penetrate the concrete.

A coating not only helps to keep concrete looking good and strong for longer, but it also often makes the surface easier to clean and maintain.
